Chiang Kai-shek, Mme

   Chiang Kai-shek’s wife was a well-educated woman who had been brought up with Western ideas. She helped to interpret the West for Chiang and was responsible for setting up the Flying School with Major General CHENNAULT in the mid-1930s. She kept up a constant barrage of requests for war materials and on WILLKIE’s suggestion visited the USA in 1943 to publicize China’s contribution to World War II. She attended the Cairo Conference with her husband and created an impression on all those attending, in some cases unfavorable. General BROOKE said of her, she was ‘a queer character in which sex and politics seemed to predominate, both being used to achieve her ends.’
